Skill Streams for Success

 The Skill Streams for Success Program will provide an orientation to industry opportunities, basic skill requirements and serve as pathways into higher-level training programs. These programs are exclusive offerings for these sites and have an external subsidy for residents of Dinwiddie, Greensville and Sussex Counties anf the City of Emporia to support the programs.

WorkKeys Assessments and Training

All attendees may be assessed at no cost for basic skills using the ACT Work Keys System and have an opportunity to work on basic skills using the KeyTrain computer based program on-site or on-line. Participants may also qualify for the Virginia Career Readiness Certificate.

Upcoming Computer Classes - Fall 2008

Computer Classes

The computer Skill Streams will begin with basic skills such as Introduction to Microcomputers and Windows and will lead toward more advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office (Introduction to Personal Computers, Internet and Email, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). The classes are taught in the 16 seat computer lab at the Foundation building. These skill building computer streams are intended to provide computer skills for the business world and are not intended for a college transfer program.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

A Certified Nursing Assistant class will be offered at the Foundation in the Fall of 2008. This will be a 120 hour class and those successfully completing this class and passing the state examination are eligible for hiring by nursing homes and other health care facilities. There will be a $75 fee for the class. Classes are forming now; more information to follow.

There will be an Orientation for this class at the Wakefield Foundation on Tuesday, September 2 at 6:00PM.

Classes will begin on September 8 and meet every Monday and Tuesday evening from 6:00PM-9:30PM.

The Clinical Phase will be in January, 2009; limited space available.

CDL Tractor Trailer Driving School

A 160 hour, 8 weekend (Saturday and Sunday) CDL tractor trailer driving school will begin September 2008 at the Wakefield Foundation. The program will be presented on-site. Personal Care Assistant Class (PCA)

A Personal Care Assistant Class is offered at the Foundation, though not currently scheduled for Fall 2008. This is a 40 hour class and those successfully completing the class are eligible for hiring by home health care companies. There is a $50 fee for the class.


This Skill Streams for Success Program is exclusive to the Wakefield facility and has an external subsidy from the Crater Regional Partnership and the Virginia Tobacco lndemnification and Community Revitalization Commission to support the programs. The computer-based training using the KeyTrain program will provide individuals an opportunity to close basic skill gaps which may help them in finding employment.
